08/23/2007 - New Haven, CT (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Defending champion, top-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko and fourth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer were second-round winners Wednesday at the $650,000 Pilot Pen Tennis event, a final U.S. Open tune-up.

Rain wreaked havoc here on Tuesday, as most of the day's schedule was postponed until Wednesday.

Davydenko, who beat Argentine Agustin Calleri in last year's finale here, eliminated American Donald Young, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, to advance to Thursday's quarterfinal round.

Ferrer also needed three sets to overcome another American, John Isner, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 6-2.

Fifth-seeded Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu edged out Peruvian lucky-loser Luis Horna 6-3, 7-6 (7-3); former Aussie Open champion Thomas Johansson of Sweden ousted eighth-seeded Italian Potito Starace 7-6 (7-3), 6-3; Argentine Jose Acasuso erased ninth-seeded Slovakian Dominik Hrbaty 6-1, 7-5; and 10th-seeded Spaniard Nicolas Almagro overcame Frenchman Julien Benneteau 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-3.

In other second-round play, 11th-seeded Croat Ivo Karlovic topped American Michael Russell 7-6 (7-2), 6-4; 12th-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco came back to beat American Vincent Spadea 2-6, 6-4, 6-2; 13th-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon outlasted Argentine Juan Martin del Potro 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (5-7), 7-5; 14th-seeded Russian Igor Andreev snuck past Spaniard Albert Montanes 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-4); Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka knocked out 15th-seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils 7-6 (7-5), 6-4; and a 16th-seeded Calleri tackled American Robby Ginepri 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 on Day 4. Calleri will meet third-seeded American James Blake on Thursday. Blake captured this event in 2005 and was last week's Cincinnati Masters runner-up to the great Roger Federer.

All of this week's 16 seeds received opening-round byes.

The 2007 New Haven champion will collect $84,000.

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
